Wellbeing moves up the agenda for employers June 2011

Posted date: 31 May 2011
Workforce health is becoming a higher priority for multinational companies.

According to Towers Watson, employers are intending to put a greater focus on the health and wellbeing of their employees due to growing concerns over the price of healthcare.

Nearly three-quarters of employers surveyed said that promoting health and wellbeing will be a bigger priority over the next two years, while 87 per cent said that it would be a priority in the next two to four years. Due to this new concern for employee wellness, nearly half of respondents intend to introduce a global workforce health strategy.

Francis Coleman, a Senior International Consultant at Towers Watson, believes that the issue has gained importance because of the variety of healthcare systems and market practices around the world. This is coupled with the significant global cost differences for employee benefits of this nature.

“Multinationals with a clear strategy can better coordinate local health activities to improve their overall workforce health and increase the efficiency of their total spending on healthcare,” commented Coleman.

When ranking the most important objectives for their strategy, more than half said that they wanted to demonstrate their interest in employee wellbeing, resilience and stress management. Marginally fewer, 52 per cent, said that it was to help control rising benefit costs.
