Unfair dismissal claim for whistler-blower September 2011

Posted date: 28 September 2011
The former Chief Reporter at the News of the World has launched an unfair dismissal case against News International, alleginging that he was discharged for being a whistle-blower.

Neville Thurlbeck is expected to raise a claim based on the Public Interest Disclosures Act, which is designed to protect the employment of whistle-blowers.

The 50-year-old has been implicated in the phone hacking scandal that surrounded the newspaper. Thurlbeck is currently on police bail after he was named in an email sent to Glenn Mulcaire, who was a private investigator working for the paper. It suggests that phone hacking practices were not limited to one rogue reporter, although both Rupert and James Murdoch denied this when questioned by MPs.

A preliminary hearing is to take place on 30 September at the East London Tribunal Service. Thurlbeck has been bailed until March 2012 while further inquiries are made.
