More RTI volunteers required November 2011

Posted date: 28 November 2011

An extra 1,300 employers are being called to join the pilot for Real-Time Information (RTI) in July 2012.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) already has
300 organisations in place who will be submitting RTI data from April 2012. However, it intends to work closely with software suppliers in order to invite 1,300 additional companies to join the initiative.

“Expanding the pilot from the original 300 employers will help ensure the smooth implementation of RTI. It is an ambitious but achievable target as we know that RTI is on track," said Stephen Banyard, Acting Director General for Personal Tax at HMRC.

"We have considered all the technical and practical issues and are confident that we have the capacity to increase the pilot by more than 300 per cent in July next year,” he added.

The Pay As You Earn system is being reformed so that employers submit pay information every time an employee receives their wages, instead of using annual reporting. It is hoped that this will reduce instances of under and over payments of tax. It will also be linked to the Government's new welfare system, Universal Credit, to ensure that the correct benefits are recieved.

Depending on the findings from this initial pilot, HMRC intends to ask a further 250,000 volunteer employers to join RTI in November 2012.
