Childcare costs January 2012

Posted date: 21 December 2011

The value of childcare vouchers (CCVs) would need to rise to £83 per week for basic rate taxpayers in order to offset the rise in costs.

Research from the Social Market Foundation (SMF) has found that parents are paying more due to the growth in childcare charges and reduced Government funding. In 2006 support for working mothers and fathers was at a peak. In order to return to this level, tax relief for vouchers would need to rise by £28 per week, up from £55 for basic rate taxpayers.

Fiona Shields, Chair of the Childcare Voucher Providers Association, said: “The SMF’s report, The Parent Trap, demonstrates for the first time the different forms of childcare support provided to working families and analyses the projected costs of childcare.”
