Agency worker changes May 2011

Posted date: 27 April 2011
Changes to the Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) will bring temporary workers’ rights in line with permanent staff after a period of 12 weeks.

The Regulations come into force from October 2011 and will have an impact on the level of pay given to temporary workers. They will be entitled to equal pay, including any performance-related bonuses, that full-time staff receive.

The AWR, which have been pushed through from the European Union, were explained by Edward Davey, Employment Relations Minister, at a recent seminar held by Headstart Employment.

Davey said: “It’s been my task to look at Agency Workers Regulations to see how we can ease the implementation.”

Susie Johnstone-Lee, Director of Headstart Employment, commented on the impact of the seminar.

“It is important that clients understand that the Regulations will not affect the flexibility that agency workers provide. The breakfast seminar enabled us to explain that there is no need to fear an increase in bureaucracy, as we will take the load to ensure a smooth transition when the Regulations come into effect,” she said.

Draft guidance for the Regulations is currently on the Business Link website.
